Databases: Tokens

Although one of the lesser known fields of numismatics, it is nonetheless an interesting one. Tokens were used in the first place as counting implements in calculation boards. Later on, they were used as remuneration and were called “attendance tokens”.

Tokens are closely linked to the history of the public institutions from the Old Regime such as the Court of Accounts, the Estates of Brittany or the Nantes City Hall. The Dobrée museum has the largest collection of coins from these three sovereign courts. But the museum also holds other remarkable collections from the nobility in Brittany, the mayors of Angers, the city of Paris and the royal institutions.
